Dougie's wargaming studio

In the world of historical miniature gaming, painting and selling gaming figures is not only a hobby but also a way to personalise the gaming experience. To create intricate designs and vibrant colours, a dedicated workspace that offers comfort and functionality is essential. This case study explores how the transformation of a garden building into a dedicated painting studio enhanced the gaming figure business of our clients, Dougie and his son Alex.

Dougie and Alex are passionate historical miniature gaming painters. They turned their shared hobby into a business, painting and selling gaming figures to fellow enthusiasts. Initially using a spare room as their painting studio, they faced challenges with limited space and constant interruptions, hampering their creative flow and productivity. Seeking a solution, Dougie decided to invest in a garden building to create a dedicated and conducive workspace.

Goals and Objectives:

  1. Establish a dedicated workspace: Create a separate and spacious area solely dedicated to painting gaming figures, enabling focused and uninterrupted work.
  2. Enhance productivity: Minimise distractions, streamline workflow, and improve organisation to maximise output and efficiency.
  3. Optimise lighting and ambiance: Ensure adequate lighting for detailed work and create a comfortable and inspiring environment.
  4. Expand business opportunities: Develop a professional and inviting space to attract clients and expand their reach.

Implementation:

  1. Consultation and Planning: Dougie collaborated with Lee, the lead designer, to conceptualise a garden building that met their specific requirements. They discussed the layout, size, insulation, and other essential features necessary for an ideal painting studio. GCS carried out the associated groundworks creating a 5m x 3m concrete pad which provided a stable base for their building.

  2. Garden Building Selection: They chose a sturdy and well-insulated Woodpro garden building with ample space, suitable for year-round use. The building incorporated large windows to allow natural light, providing a connection with the outdoors and a pleasant working environment.

  3. Interior Design and Layout: The layout was carefully planned to maximise efficiency and organisation. Workbenches were added, offering plenty of space for multiple projects. Shelves, drawers, and storage units were strategically placed to keep painting supplies, brushes, and gaming figures organised and easily accessible.

  4. Lighting and Ambiance: Dougie enlisted the services of our recommended electrician to install suitable lighting fixtures. They opted for a combination of artificial and natural lighting from the windows to ensure optimal visibility. Carpeting was added to enhance comfort and create a welcoming atmosphere.

Results and Benefits:

  1. Enhanced Focus and Productivity: The dedicated garden building provided Dougie and Alex with an exclusive space, free from distractions. This allowed them to immerse themselves fully in their work, resulting in improved focus, attention to detail, and increased productivity.

  2. Streamlined Workflow and Organisation: The well-planned layout and optimised storage solutions enabled efficient workflow and easy access to painting supplies. This streamlined their processes, reducing the time spent searching for materials and enhancing overall productivity.

  3. Optimal Lighting and Comfortable Environment: The combination of artificial and ample natural light facilitated detailed painting work, reducing eye strain. The comfortable and inspiring environment created in the garden building enhanced creativity and prolonged painting sessions.

  4. Business Expansion: The professional and inviting space created by the garden building helped Dougie and Alex attract new clients and expand their business opportunities all the way to America! The dedicated studio showcased their skills and commitment, making a positive impression on potential customers.

Transforming a garden building into a dedicated painting studio proved to be a significant milestone for Dougie and Alex's gaming figure business. The carefully planned layout, optimised lighting, streamlined workflow, and comfortable environment greatly enhanced their productivity and creativity. This investment not only provided them with a dedicated space to develop their skills but also expanded their business opportunities.
